sport fishing in lake michigan??

Here’s another water activity for your Labor Day weekend! Sport fishing isn’t just for those living in tropical paradises. We here in Chicago can partake too!

A few weekends ago, my husband and I ventured out with his parents and their friends on an afternoon charter. The charter holds 6 passengers – not too small, not too big – and leaves from Montrose Harbor. Our captain was Captain Jeff (HIGHLY RECOMMEND HIM!) with Lake Michigan Fishing Charters Inc. He’s incredibly knowledgeable and quite the character!

Once you board, the captain takes you deep out into Lake Michigan to the best spots known for King Salmon, Silver Salmon, Lake Trout, Steelhead, Brown Trout, and Perch. (Jake’s family was mainly concerned with catching some yummy King Salmon!) Here are some pics of us fishing!

In total, we caught 12 fish, which made for 24 fillets! Each couple walked away with 8 large fillets.

I had some good catches, but the catch-of-the-day belongs to Jake, who caught a 15lb King Salmon. Paula was a close second (see picture below).

The best days to go are days that are slightly overcast (fish come to the surface when the sun isn’t out). After you catch the fish, the captain will fillet them for you on the boat. If you’re interested, call or email Lake Michigan Fishing Charters Inc. Make sure to ask for Jeff!!
